British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of access tunnels down to the depot... early reports indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces involved in this strike for their skill and their valour," Healey said. "They were among a great many UK service members on duty over the holidays. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the US military carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
