The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
